AWATUNA.
(Our Own Correspondent.) There was a fair muster of cattle at our sale-yards on Monday the 9th inst. A fair number of buyers were present and bidding was tolerabiy brisk ; but reserves in most cases were high, and few pens changed at the hammer. Several lots, "however, were negotiated after the sale. When the sale was about half over it commenced to rain heavily and the cattle* looked miserable. The pens need paving very badly. The stock and the yardsman seemed to compete in their efforts to find terra firma. The Awatuna sale is in its infancy at present " but I am confident»that in the near future it will grow and wax strong and • become as great a source of convenience to our settlers as I hope it will be a source of profit to Mr Scott, the auctioneer. At the last meeting of the Waimate Road Board, deputations from the Mangawhero and Auroa Roads waited upon the Board to urge that body to • initiate steps towards raising loans to metal the two roads in question. The Board decided to grant the prayer of. the petitioners and proceed with tHe advertising. ' The only opposition came from the Chairman of the Board who seems to consider that those settlers living on side roads should have the privilege of assisting to'maintain the county roads in repair, but they should, if he had Lis way, remain permanently in the mud, if it were only to make a sort of contrast to * settlers on a good metalled road.
