We have to acknowledge receipt of the Post and Telegraph Guide for current quarter from the Chief [Postmaster, New Plymouth.
Kev Mr Marshall advertises for information about a cow. which was purchased at Mr Scott's sale on Friday last, and which has since strayed. Tenders are called for underecrubbing and bu'hfelling on the Kahui Eoad by Mr E. Barton, Hawera.
The Waimate Witness publishes Mr J. E. Stewart's report on the damage done to the jetty, but make 3 a serious omission, which tends to mislead-its readers. The New South Wales Rugby Union has informed the New Zealand Union that their representative team's visit will be based on a five week's absence from Sydney. The team wiil arrive in Auckland by the Talune on Thursday, August 2nd, playing Auckland tre following Srturday, and North Island, at Auckland, on Tuesday or Wednesday following. Then the team will come down the West Coast, across to Napier, and down to Wellington. The team will be some 25 days in the colony, and propose to play three matches per week. New South Wales Union lias notified the New Zealand Union that it has declined to play Otago.
Judge Williams delivered judgment in the Cluthn wholesale licensing case. The motion being to quash the license granted by Mr Hawkins in the district where a prohibition vote was recorded. The Judge was of the opinion that section 14 prohibited the granting of this license, and ordered a writ to issue, ten guineas costs allowed against McKenzie' the person who was granted the license.
A notice to shareholders in the Opunake Newspaper and Printing Co. Limited appears in this issue requesting payment of calls due. We trust that all those who have not yet paid full amount of calls—2s3 per share—will do so without delay. Mr J. Stewart, ©rated water manufacturer, has had a very handsome and commodious express built for the delivery of his goods up and down th« coast during the coming season. The express which is very strongly put together was built in the coach-building establishment of Mr Donald McGregor, and certainly reflects credit on the maker. Mr Des Forges was entrusted with the lettering which is on boards to be placed on each side of the express, and, being in best style, would do credit to a city establishment, the lettering being very neat and the coloring harmonious.
A scries of conceits are being organised in aid of the jetty fund, and the first one was to have been held in about a fortnight's time, but, owing to the Foresters' ball, which takes place on the 20th inst. intervening, it has been decided to postpone the first concert until the following month. Mr J. W. Rogers met with a very painful accident on Saturday. He was assisting in lifting a coping stone on to a wall which was being repaired on his farm at Pihama when the stone slipped and jamming his thumb crushed it very severely almost teariug the nail off. The Town Board meeting stands adjourned till Wednesday evening, there being no quorum on Monday evening, Mr C. F. McGregor being the only member present. Messrs Holmes and Geary having leased Mr Vickery's sawmill are about to move it up the Waiteika Eoad on to Messrs Geary Bros, section where there is a first class rimu and matai bush. The road was in a very bad state, but their neighbours Messrs. Coombridge, McKenzie, and Graham formed a working bee aud made it passable. The Rev. G. T. Marshall preaches at Rowan Road on Wednesday, and at Eltham Road on Friday evening in this week.
Some Otakeho settlers who were at Mr Scott's cattle sale on Friday last found when they got to Otakeho that they had four heifers too many, which they cut out and headed them back towards Opunake where they supposed they came from. As it was nearly dark before they left Opunake they probably picked them up somewhere close to the township. Our settlers had better have a look over their cattle to see if there are any missing.
At a meeting of the Court Egmont Lodge, A.0.F., held on Saturday evening, arrangements were completed for the ball to be held on Friday, the 20th inst. The following were appointed a committee :—Messrs ll.' J. Newman. H. Mann, R. Warner, C. F. McGregor, E. Edmunds, T. Knowles, and J. Twoomey. Mr J. Twoomey was Appointed secretary. The Anchor Lino s.s. Aorere arrived at Opunake on Sunday at 2 p.m. She discharged pait of her cargo on Sunday and then lay in the bay till Monday, when she finished discharging and proceeded north.
