Opunake Hotel.
Alterations and Additione.
In order to meet the increasing demand of his trade Mr T. Knowles has decided on making very extensive alterations aud additions to the Opnnake Hotel. There is to be an addition present building, having 88 feet frontage by 3G feet deep, aud, like the present building, having two storeys. The front of the lower storey of the present building is to be altered by the removal of the present large windows, and two tsircular headed mullion windows put in so as to match the two windows which are to be put in the new section. There will be a main entrance in the centre of the building leading into a spacious hall eight feet wide, at the end of which is the main staircase leading to the upper storey. On the ris;ht of the hall the bar, 10 feet by 12 feet, will be situated, having a semi-circular cduik ter similar to the present one. The commercial-room will front the main street, and across a passage to the back of the bar will be the biliiardroom, 22 feet by 18 feet, having a brick chimney and fire-place, and beside the billiard-room opening into the same passage will be a sample-room, 18 feet by 9 feet 6 inches. The present bar space will be occupied by a comfortable reading-room and a suug little parlor. There will be a private entrance on the western side of the buildiug which will lead into the din-ing-room. This room is to be enlarged by the removal of both partitions and the present staircase, which will make a splendid room nearly 20 feet square. All the rooms and passages on the ground floor are to be dadoed four feet high, and the ceilings pannelled. Upstairs, in the present building, one of the bed-rooms is to be thrown into the sitting-room, which will give a front view of the harbor, &0., and make a fine large room for the convenience of families. ' The upstairs portion of. the new section will provide nine extra bed-3ooms and bath-room, and the fire escape will be removed from the side to the back of the building off the main passage. The work is to be completed by November next. Mr A. O'Biieu is the successful tenderer for the work, and in his hands it will be faithfully carried out. The tenders were :-*- A. O'Brien, Opnnake, £OOS (accepted) ; R. Hood, Hawera, £014; J. J. Ros-s, Opnnake, £OBI ; Carroll and Artindale, £Ol7. The stable, which stood on the site of (he new part to be erected, has bee* removed further back in the section, and large ad© ditions in stalls and loose boxes made, so that ample accommodation will be provided for the travelling public.
