OXFORD TIMBER.

We have been favored with the following letter, received by the Chairman of the Oxford Road Board, which speaks for itself :— Hurunui, February 3, 1890. 'Dear Sir,- I have much pleasure m forwarding you two samples of black birch used m the construction of (.he Hurunui Bridge, built by Mr E. J. Wright, m 1869, and obtained from the Oxford bush. The one piece is part of capsil, and the other part of lower walling (chiefly under water.) The pieces are a fair sample of the whole of the heart wood used, and fully bears out the good opinion I have had of black birch for bridge purposes for many years, providing it is cut at the right season of the year. Yours, respoctfnlly, J. W. Thomas, Contractor, Hurunui.
