CARLETON.

Mr A. Burrows, a preacher connected with the Plymouth Brethren, has been holding religious meetings at the Institute Hall on recent Sunday evenings. His discourses have attracted the attention of large audiences, and. so great is the impresion created among the residents by bis fervor and ability in preaching the Gospel, that a movement has been set on foot with the objeet of raising a substantial fund to defray his expenses up to the present date, and to procure for the district the advantage of his continued ministrations. There is no doubt that the enlightened tenets of the Plymouth Brethren, coupled with the remarkable powers of their preachers, have won greatly upon the hearts of religious people in this Province ; and it will behove the adherents of old-fashioned " orthodoxy " to look to their armor, lest they find themselves pierced at many a point. On Monday next, Anniversary Day, there will be a Carleton farmers' picnic at the the Ashley Gorge. Intending pleasurers are requested to meet at the Carleton district school at 9 a.m. Given fine weather,

this annual holiday among our friends in that neighborhood should be as pleasant a gathering as its predecessors. A s for the attendance, there is np need to fear on that score; the young ladies will be there, and consequently the young men will be all there. Then, too, the elderly ladies will be on the spot to look after the young ones; and their male compeers will go to keep their eye on the — lemonade! Long live the picnic season ! • ■
