CONTRACTS TO ALIENS.

COMPLAINT AT THAMES.

It was mentioned by Mr R. Law at the meeting of the Thames County Council yesterday that great exception had been taken to the. Council letting contracts to unnaturalised aliens, while some of their own people were wallcintr about idle. He considered they should take steps to protect subjects of their own country at the present time. Mr Adams suggested that a good way out of the difficulty would be to accept the lowest tender where the. tender was an alien, and for the Council to . donate to the Belgian Fund the difference between the accepted and the next lowest Render. In the case in question the Council decided to accept the second lowest tender, the opinion being ex-' pressed that the work could not be carried out for the amount of the lowest tender, which was not- much more than a-quarter of the engineer's estimate.
