LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr Gallagher has been elected Mayor of Te Aroha, and Mr Greenslade defeated Mr Foy for a similar position at the Thames. The Te Aroha News says that it is probable that Dr Smith and family will shortly leave Te Aroha and take up their residence in Paeroa. The Northern S.S. Co. is now issuing tickeis to Auckland at reduced rates—lob return, and 7s 6d single. Thesj will be issued up to 31st March aext, and return tickets will be available for three months from day of issue.

The members of tho Ohinemuri Bine Volunteers (No. 1 Company) have this week been busily engaged afc their annual volley firing. Cherries, gooseberries, kidney potatoes, splendid hams, and all classes of produce, together with furniture, crockery, and sundries, will be cleared at Mackay and Pratt's auction sale on Thursday next, Dec. 7th. By a proclamation published in the New Zealand Gazette of the lOth'inst., the Governor lias permanently reserved the watershed of the Tarariki Creek (1,138 acres) as a reserve for the conservation of the water supply for the inhabitants of Paevoa. This was done at the request of the Ohinemuri County Council. In the last report of the Education Board meeting we notice that Miss S. Smith, who has been connected with the Paeroa School for several years, has been recommended te the ICauaeranga Valley School Committee as head teacher. As this is in accordance with Mies Smith's wishes, we must congratulate her, though feeling sure that her depaiaire will be a matter for regret to parents and children who have known her so long.

The Ohinernuri Public Library has again been fortunate in being presented by Mr Edwin J. Sinnefct, of Karangahake, with a most exquisite piece of illuminated penmanship. "Industry is Rest" is the motto round which intertwine beautifully coloured tendrils and flowers. The penmanship of the accompanying verse is very fine, as is also the fine tracery that covers the whole. Our national emblems, including the palm of the Southern Seas, have their places in a production of which the Paeroaites have reason to be proud. The anniversary of the Wesleyan Sunday School, which was announced for to-morrow, has been unavoidably postponed until to-niorrow fortnight. To meet the wishes and requirements of a number of their customers Messrs Mackay and Pratt have decided to add stock and share-broking to their general business. Having established a connection in this line with Messrs Q. A. Buttle and D. B. McDonald, well-known members of the Auckland Stock Exchange, Messrs Mackay and Pratt are in a position to give accurate quotations of the market rates and prompt and satisfactory despatch of business. # : Our Turua correspondent writes: - " Mr Proctor has nearly completed lxis contract on the Turua-Netherton road. When this is done, and two or three bridges erected, communication will be established between this place and Paeroa. It is to be hoped that the Ohinemuri County Council at its next meeting will attend to the bridges." Our local Fire Insurance Agents, Messrs Mackay and Pratt, are, as usual, well to the fore in supplying to their clients almanacs for the new year, 1900, issued by the New Zealand Insurance Co. Attention is drawn to the fact that this firm also acts for the Phoenix Assurance Co. In accident, .plate glass, and other like insurances, they act for the Ocean Accident Insurance Co., one of the strongest in the world, and whose rates are lower thaxrcan be quoted by any other company,
