Fatal Accident at Waitekauri.
THE INQUEST.
An inquest was held at the Waitekauri Oo.'s office, Golden Cross, before Air Forrest, Coroner, on Wednesday night,'touching the-death of Charles Luscombo, who was killed at 1 o'clock ou Wednesday morning- by tho breaking of a rope in the No. 1 shaft of the Waitekauri Oo.'s mine. The evidence went to show that the responsible officers-had carefully examinod the winding rope and the fittings at midnight, and everything appeared to be in perfect order. However, whilst a bucket of mullock was being heaved up the rope parted 40 feet above the bucket, and the bucket fell on deceased's head and shoulders, and mangled the poor fellow, killing him instantly. The accident appears to be a mysterious one, inasmuch as the rope was guaranteed to stand a breaking strain of 12 tons, and had only been in use five weeks. The bucket^ and contents weighed 5J cwt., whilst the winding engine was only capable of lifting 9£ cwt. nominal, but might actually lift 16 cwt. at the most. The verdict was to the effect that the deceased was accidentally killed by tho breaking of a faulty rope, no blame being attachable to any of the Company's workmen or officers. Decesased came from Queensland, and had no relatives in the colony.
