A DREAM.

(To the Editor)

Sir, I had a dream recently.^ A dream of an absolutely united c^iß^, in which this foolish party this disunion of what should be a unity—a oneness—shall be dpne away with. The ultimate fibre of our desire, each and all of .us, is as the Great Architect of the Universe has given us the word, in peace on earth and good will to men. ■ Now we have in this colony a system absolutely adverse to this. Our own local election is setting man's hand against man's hand. It is creating enmities and jealousies; sowing seeds' of annimosities that -may lurkingly last and doing in a general manner a great hurt to all of us. Tho shatnnese of the whole thing appalls me. All the candidates, it seems to me, are working for self-aggrandisement, or money, or a billet. Needs must be that among men, . some shall bo higher than others, despite all arguments of "equality." But do let us see that I the election and the placing of such above his brothers be not guided by chance, as the Ohinemuri election appears to so become. There is nothing to stop a man with £10 to lose for notoriety's sake, and two anybodies to nominate him from getting his name into every paper in the colony. This is getting so well known that men of the least standing, education, or general knowledgepetty adventurers —of the pettiest sort, ! risk their tenner on the .chance. They may be bought out, get a billet, or d".'Vi be elected, their Deus being mostly the same brand as he who governs TattersalPs swoeps. Given this class of candidate,, and a Premier like Jf-'eddon, 1 ■■ who works with the j colony's money, how easy the Marrionettes can be worked —are worked. —Yours truly, W. W. B. , Waihi, Nov. 30,v1899. '
