Alleged Sheep Stealing.

At the Police Court on Monday, before Messrs 0. F. Mitchell and Captain Forster, Js.P., Henry Harley was charged on remand with stealing 108 sheep, valued at £60 Bs, the property of his father, Charles Harloy, of Waihi.

Mr Porritt appeared for the accused, and said :hat since the matter had been in the hands of the police Mr Harley had found that his son had sold th 3 sheep to Mr Vuglar, receiving £10 10s on account. This money had since I een paid to Mr Harley, who had rai ilied the bargain. Under these circunx-tances ho did not think the case co ild be goue on with. Serg:;ant Brei.nan said he did not know i?. this was so, but the informant now refused to give any evidence in the cas ■). He would therefore ask for costs.

Mr Porritt sa;d Constable "Whelan was the inform ant, and costs could »nly be given against the informant. Constable Whelan g-ave ovidenco to show that he went into the case at Mr Harloy:s request. A reward of £5 was oiiered for the discovery of the thief. He also intended to claim this.

The case was accordingly dismissed, no evidence being offered. Charles Harloy was ordered to pay costs, £o, 5s Gd, as expeusos incurred in effecting tho arrest.
