Parliament opens on the 11th inst, A reward of £250 is offered for information as to the whereabouts of Detective Kirby. The Hon. J. MeKenzie, Minister of Lands, leaves Auckland to-morrow for Wellington. . Mr Chas. Mclndoe, for many years advertising clerk on the Auckland '•Herald," died at Invercargill on Thursday last. , Mr Thos. Cantley, who was recently appointed secretary of the Thames Charitable Aid Board, commenced his duties on Monday last,-the Ist inst. Mr Curtis, mining expert, visited the Talisman property, at Karangahake, last Friday, and vras shown over the mine by Mr Goldsworthy, manager. Mr T. A. Dunlop and Mr McCarthy passed through Paeroa last week from, the Thames on their way to Karangahake arid returned to Paeroa last Saturday. On Saturday last,at the Thames a rifle match, took place between the Thames Navals and the Te Arolia Rifles. . The result was in favour of the former, the' scores being Thames 669 points, Te Aroha 645. Mr Bell, station-master, left Paeroa, last Saturday evening, to take up his new duties as clerk in the Auckland railway office. During his stay in Paeroa Mr Bell was very popular, and his departure is much regretted.

During last week ending Saturday, the amount received in the" Warden's Office on account of applications for special claims, licensed holdings, water races, and machine sites was £1,208 19s. This is a gratifying proof that the boom has come to stay.

Mr Greorge Loram, who only recently took over the Criterion Hotel from Messrs Cassrels and Bennett, has made over his interest to Mr Bastings of Dunedin, who takes possession of both Criterion Hotel and Criterion Theatre from to-day. Mr Loram does not intend leaving the district, having within the last few months become interested in a large number of mining properties.

Regarding the appointment of a Fire Inspector, which the Paeroa Fire Brigade are very anxious about, we made enquiries as to whether the insurance companies could in any way assist, but we learn that the companies do not identify themselves with fire brigades ,in any way. But we may add that wherever there is a fire brigade and good water supply, the rates of insurance are reduced according to the efficiency of the brigade.

The p.s. Te Aroha, which is being got ready in Auckland for the purpose of running direct from Auckland to Paeroa, will be ready in a few.-days,- and it is expected that she will take in cargo for Paeroa by the end of this week, or the beginning of next. She will then run regularly, making two trips a week from the Wharf street wharf to Auckland and back. Captain Bindon has been told that it has been reported here that he had given up the idea of running between Paeroa and Auckland,,but says "he never Shall." . . ■■• ;

The senior football contest under the auspices of the Ohinemuri Rugby Union was continued on Saturday last in Paeroa, the/opposing teams being Waitekauri and Paeroa. The game was very keenly contested, and on the whole was very even. "Within the last five minutes of the second spell, however, A. Cassidy, for Waitekauri, crossed the Paeroa line twice, and both kicks being entrusted to McMillan, they successfully piloted the oval over the bar amidst great excitement, Waitekauri thus winning by 10 points to nil. Mr J. Christie, of the Thames, performed the duties of referee, and gave every satisfaction.

Last Sunday evening, after service, the members of the Karangahake Roman Catholic Church Committee held a meeting in the Public Hall, at which were present the ladie3 and gentlemen appointed last month to collect subscriptions for the erection of a new church in the township. The lists handed in for the month showed subscriptions to the amount of £62. Father Hackett thanked the collectors for the good beginning made, and requested them to continue their labours, as the- church to be erected at Karangahake would require to be larger than the public hall where the seating accomodation, especially on Sunday evenings, is taxed to the utmost. . Messrs Moore and O'ljara have made a vigorous start -on the ;new Hotel in Belmont Eoad. The foundations are all in, and the excavation for the cellar is now being cemented. It will %ake about three months to finish the work. We also understand that tenders are to be called at once for the erection of the new Criterion Hotel. -

From Monday last, the lstinst, the reduced charges for telegrams came into force. The rates are sixpence for "an ordinary message, and one shilling for an urgent message of twelve words, including the address and signature, Over that number Id will be charged for ordinary and 2d for urgent messages.

Yesterday Messrs J. M. Bobson and C F. Mitchell left for Cambridge to interview the Minister of Lands on behalf of the leaseholders of the Paeroa township, to urge upon the Government to make such arrangements with Messrs Cassrels and Bonnett as would enable the holders of allotments (sub-leases) to obtain freehold titles from the Crown for the allotments they hold at once; instead of having to wait till their leases run out, some 13J years hence.

We draw attention to the preliminary notice by J. Kennedy, auctioneer, of the sale of Mr H. 0. Wick's horses, plough, dray, chaff-cutters, etc. The date of sale will be given in a future issue. The Waihi Co. are calling for.tenders for excavation of tank shed at Owharoa battery, and for a section of the Waihi Valley tramway. The new butcher shop was opened by R. C. Noedl, on Belmont Road, below the Royal Mail Hotel, with a very fine display,, of meat, beef, mutton, &c, and we were glad to see that he has made suck a good commencement, hig shop being crowded during the last two days. We wish him every success. When the Warden's Court opened on Tuesday, the Warden said that Mr Hazard had satisfactorily completed a plan of the Waihi township. The plan will in a few days-be in the Court, and a tracing -will be deposited in the Post Office.Ut Waihi. At a sitting of the Police Court, on Tuesday, Harry Peterkin, alias White, was remanded to Auckland on a charge of forgery.'
