POSTAL SERVICES
Railway Strike
Effort To Maintain Deliveries
Post office staffs, with the Christmas rush over, are usually able to relax to some extent after the holidays," but they will be facing new problems this year unless the railways strike is brought to an early end. The strike, and the resultant lack of transport, will not affect the Post Office to any extent until Wednesday, when the first large movement of post-holi-day mail is scheduled. A Postal Department officer told the Daily Times last night, however, that arrangements were in hand for dealing with the situation. It was hoped that at least one exchange of mail to the north and to the south daily could be arranged, while the department was equally hopeful that a daily service to and from Central Otago could be maintained.
Airmail, ’of course, would not be affected. The arrangements which were being made would apply only to first class mail matter, but it was intended that every endeavour should be made to clear second class consignments as well.
Parcels will be accepted only at the sender’s risk. Perishable parcels will not be accepted unless the situation shows that a guarantee of delivery can be given.
