DEMAND FOR BEER
Visitors From Australia
Disappointed
Australians arriving in Christchurch by the planes which flew from Sydney on Monday were thirsty—for beer. Hospitable Christchurch organisers of a cocktail • party at Harewood had scoured all sources for that New Zealand rarity, whisky, and they provided plenty of it. The Australians descended upon, the slender supply of beer, and it was soon exhausted. , They were very disappointed. As one visitor said: “I’ve just laid in my Christmas supply back in Melbourne. To get one bottle of beer I had to buy a dozen of spirits.” As a footnote he added that bottled beer is not available anywhere in Melbourne or Sydney At the night clubs is costs £1 a bottle, and some Sydney hotels have issued to regular patrons coupons as a Christmas present, which entitle the holder to purchase one dozen bottles of beer. Unlike New Zealand, Australia issues distilling licences and locally produced spirits are plentiful.
