BRENTS, LIMITED
Tourist Licence May ’Not Be Of Value Dally Times Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 8. Speaking at the annual meeting of shareholders of Brents, Ltd., today, the chairman of directors. Sir Ernest Davis, said it was questionable under the conditions that had been tentatively brought forward whether a tourist licence would be of any value either to guests or to shareholders of Brents. The directors had applied for a licence, continued Sir Ernest, but he did not wish to imply that the licence would be granted or that the directors would accept it without considerable further investigation. The past year was not an easy one, said Sir Ernest. Tariff rates were still under the . control of the Price Tribunal, and certain increases had been allowed, but there was always a time lag. Two wage increases during the year were made immediate and retrospective, while on the other hand the Price Tribunal took anything from one to two months to make a decision. In addition, rises in prices took place in almost every commddity the company bought. A record number of people stayed at Brents during the year, continued the chairman, and paid in board an average of more than £I3OO weekly. Revenue rose by £3OOO to establish a new record of £70.000.
