CHRISTCHURCH PROPOSAL

PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 7. The only Christchurch development in the milk pasteurisers and bottlers’ dispute today was a suggestion by the local union delegates, Messrs O. Peters and G. A. Hill, that the national executive should consider referring the dispute to the Federation of Labour. No reply had been received this evening, and a meeting of Christchurch workers has been called for 5 p.m. when works ends tomorrow. In the meantime, Christchurch members of the union in the processing and bottling plants of the Christchurch Milk Company still intend to go on strike at midnight on Sunday unless their wage demands are met. The local union delegates explained that their branch embraces Canterbury, Otago and Southland, and that they were in consultation with, the secretary, Mr J. T. Ellison, who lives at Edendale, but is now in Dunedin. When asked why the Christchurch men proposed to interfere with the supply of treated milk to the public instead of advancing wage claims through the legal channels, the delegates said any statement on this matter would have to come from Mr Ellison representing the whole branch. The decision to strike is reported to have been carried by a four to one majority.
