OFFER OF HALL
Kindergarten Purposes Writing on the offer of the Oamaru North Methodist Trust for the free use of its hall for five years for kindergarten purposes, the Director of Education, Dr C. E. Beeby, advised a meeting of the Oamaru Free Kindergarten Association on Wednesday that he thought the association’s acceptance of the offer was a wise decision. The association could, he said, institute a kindergarten as soon as trained staff was secured and thus meet the immediate'needs of the pre-school children in Oamaru without waiting for the time when the' association was in a position to build a permanent kindergarten. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs D. McCulloch; vice-presidents Mesdames Gardner, J. Meikle; Mitchell*and Burton; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. F. Jones; honorary medical officer, Dr E. Fitzgerald. It was reported that £419 5s 9d was raised at the recent carnival, and the association now had a credit balance of £1636. The following contributions were recently received:—Colonel Cowie Nichols £IOO, Townswomen’s Guild £22 10s, McCallum and Co. £lO, Mr W. Scaife £5. The New Zealand Kindergarten Association advised that there was no ruling with respect to the size of buildings to be erected, but suggested that the locality, number of children requiririg kindergarten experience, and other factors determined the advisability of building either a grade 1 or grade 2 kindergarten. The Otago Education Board advised that the association’s application for the use of an area at Casa Nova School for building a kindergarten was receiving consideration.
