OAMARU BATHS

Grants For Filtration Plant Unlikely MEETING OF COUNCIL Advice that it was unlikely that funds would be made available for grants towards the cost of installing a chlorination and filtration plant at the Oamaru Baths was received from the Department of Internal Affairs at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council last night. The department advised that the amount of funds available under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, 1937, had been reduced considerably, and the amount allotted for this purpose had been fully expended—The letter was received. The Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, was in the chair, and also present were Crs W. M. Uttley, J. I. McEwan. A. G. McHardy, A. E. Hodge, N. Meikle. S. L*e, J. B. Steven, J. S. Jackman, W. R. Williams, A. Wilson, J. H. Chappell and T. R. Beatty. The North Oamaru Citizens’ Association wrote asking the council to give consideration to the provision of seats and children’s playing amenities at Roberts Park. The association was also of the opinion that a sand pit would be preferable to a paddling pool.—The letter was referred to the Reserves Committee. The association also asked if the council would make Its mower, available to cut grass on the children’s playground at the Casa Nova School. Cr Steven said the association would be prepared to pay something towards the cost. While the area was outside the borough, it was used by children of the borough. If the association was prepared to assist towards the cost he could see no reason why the request should not be granted. The Price Control Division advised that the Price Control had authorised the following gas prices:—To 1000 cubic feet, 12s lid per 1000 cubic feet, 1001 cubic feet to 6000, 12s 6d; 6001 to 10,000, 12s Id; 10,001 and over, Us Bd. The tariffs were authorised to be charged on and after November 17.—The letter was received. The engineer, Mr K. A. Ballinger, in reply to the council's recommendation at a previous meeting that an endeavour be made to retain his services advised that he had accepted the position at Invercargill. He was appreciative of the council’s action, but he did not intend to change his mind.—The resignation was accepted with regret, Cr Meikle expressing thanks to Mr Ballinger for his work. Mr Cooney said that he hoped that Mr Ballinger would advance in the practice of his profession. The Waitakl Hospital Board wrote inr vlting the council to nominate a-qualified person to fill the third borough vacancy on the 'board. —lt was decided to nominate Mr H. C. Jeffery who, Mr Cooney said, was prepared to fill the vacancy. Because the council was holding the adjustment of his wages over until the New Year, he wished the coucil to ac.-.. cept his resignation as borough foreman as from December 29, 1950, Mr Stringer wrote. The resignation: Was accepted, and it was decided to give consideration to the appointment of an acting foreman. The Mayor and Crs McHardy, McEwan, Williams and Dee were deputed to make ■ a temporary appointment. , The recommendation that the council decline Miss Pugh’s offer of land opposite Orana Park -which she submittted for sale to the council, was adopted.
