MR R. M. MACFARLANE ELECTED MAYOR
Four Citizens’ Candidated Defeated
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 18
The Labour Party won the mayoralty of Christchurch in the local elections yesterday, and also gained control of the Christchurch City Council. The majority for Mr R. M. Macfarlane in the mayoralty was 1265. Of the 19 seats on the City Council, Labour won 12 and the Citizens’ Association 7. In the previous council, Labour held five seats. Four sitting Citizens’ Association candidates were defeated yesterday.
There are 10 city seats on the North Canterbury Hospital Board. The Citizens’ Association won six and Labour four, a gain of three for Labour. One sitting Citizens’ candidate was defeated. Of the five city seats on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the Citizens’ Association won three and Labour j two, representing a Labour gain of ’ one. Of the four city seats on the North Canterbury Catchment Board, three were won by the Citizens’ Association and one by Labour, a gain of one for Labour.
