EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tacjo s)atl\> Dimes DUNEDIN, OCTOBER 18, 1865 The Daily Times commercial report states that returns from the Gold Fields continue so satisfactory as to remove the apprehensions of those who anticipated a serious alteration in the amount of produce as a consequence of the increased Gold Fields population. The effect of improved appliances and increased capital invested in this pursuit, is now seen in our ability to maintain an amount of yield, comparing so favourably with earlier experience.

The Lake Wakatip Mail of the 11th inst says: ‘‘We are informed that yesterday the Moke Creek Copper Ore Mining Company struck a very rich lode, supposed to be a permanent one. It is singular that this vein or lode should contain all the elements td render this, the first of oUr mineral resources, a satisfactory occurence to the projectors. If carbonate and native metal are any assurances, the vein now being driven through stamps at once the character of the mine. The puzzling feature is that copper ore lodes abound, as they unfortunately do, in quartz reefs.”

A few weeks ago it v/as announced that the Lawrence Mining Company had commenced operations in the spurs leading up from Slaughterhouse Gully. Since then it has been engaged driving a shaft, and it is now announced that at a depth of 25 feet, the blue cement was struck, which at one foot from the top of the seam is found to yield a prospect equal to anything obtained at the Blue Spur. At a depth of nine feet the prospect continues equally good. Should the anticipations of experienced miners prove correct, reports our correspondent, Lawrence will yet have to congratulate itself in having the town streets paved with gold in the truest sense of the word.
