Ship Deserters In Court

Both deserters had been working steadily at Waipori, and when arrested they had considerable sums of money in their possession, said Mr J C. Robertson, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when prosecuting two seamen, Donald Charles Piper, aged 21, and Hugh Jappy, aged 23 who both pleaded guilty to deserting from, the Suffolk at Port Chalmers on August 24. The magistrate, Mr J, D Willis, sentenced each deserter to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
