CLUTHA-MOLYNEUX

Sir,—Some three years ago, when visiting Miller’s Flat, I inquired regarding the correct name of the river running through the township, some people referring to it as the Clutha, while the sign on the bridge read “ Molyneux River.” There was some doubt in the minds of several folk, although the older residents considered the sign to be correct. On visiting Lake Hawea, I observed that the Clutha River had its source there and merged with the Kawarau River at Cromwell, from which point it became the Molyneux. That is exactly what we were taught at school. Now I find that the sign on the bridge has been altered to read Clutha (an AA sign). Reference to a map shows Port Molyneux marked at the mouth of the river under inquiry. Can you please clarify the position?— I am, etc., Curious Visitor.

[The secretary, New Zealand Geographical Board, Wellington, to whom this inquiry was referred, advises that for official purposes the name of the river is Clutha from its source at Lake Wanaka to its mouth. This name alone is now used pn departmental maps. Further inquiry will \ be made. —Ed., ODT.J
