NEW PROFESSOR ARRIVES
Chair Of Anthropology At Auckland PA WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. The inauguration of anthropological teaching and research at Auckland University College is in the hands of Professor Ralph Piddington from Edinburgh University, who arrived today in the Rangitiki. “The establishment of the chair at Auckland,” he said today, “ together with corresponding developments in Australia, suggests that the Pacific dominions will see a growth in anthropological research, comparable with that which has taken place in Britain since the war. The subject is now taking its proper place in the curricula of British universities. “ Development in Auckland, however, will, of course, follow different lines. One of the most important functions should be to foster the study of the traditional language and social culture of the Maori, just as their achievements in the field of material culture are preserved in museums ia the Dominion and abroad.”
