TEA IMPORTS
No Licences Needed After December
WELLINGTON, Oct. 7.
Tea may be freely imported from Ceylon, India, and China after December 31, provided it is not exported from those countries until after November 30.
Announcing this today, the Minister of Customs, Mr Bowden, said that following the Government’s decision to abandon the bulk purchase of tea from overseas, discussions had taken place between the Marketing Department and the Tea Packers’ Federation, and it was agreed that the private importation of tea should be resumed, beginning with shipments from the country of origin after November 30. The Import Advisory Committee had considered the matter, and it had been decided that bulk tea could be imported without any import licence after December 31 from and being the produce of a non-scheduled country. Ceylon, India, and China were the main suppliers of New Zealand’s requirements. The Minister thanked the tea trade for its co-operation during bulk purchasing and in the steps necessary for the resumption of private trading.
