MEMORIAL FUND
Nursing Scholarships
APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE With the object of establishing memorial travelling scholarships for nurses, an appeal for funds was launched some time ago. The quota set for the Dunedin area was £3OOO and it is hoped that this figure may be reached by the end of the month. So far, £1242 has been given—£s92 by private donations and £605 as the proceeds of the recent Returned Services versus Rest-of-Otago Rugby football match.
The appeal has had a Commonwealth application, and various travelling scholarships have already been established. It is to come into line with such efforts that the New Zealand target of £16,000 has been set, and it is estimated that this sum will be sufficient to send a nurse overseas for post-graduate training every second year. The appeal is being organised by the RSA in co-operation with the Registered Nurses’ Association. Commending the appeal, the official organ of the RSA states: “ Selfless in their work, nurses have never appealed for special recognition or privileges; they counted it, as they have always counted it and will always consider it, a privilege to serve. Theirs is one of the world's most exacting and important tasks, performed for the satisfaction of service to the suffering and for the welfare of humanity. The response to this appeal should match the gratitude so often expressed, more often deeply felt, by those who have known the care and unflagging devotion to duty of our nursing stalls.” Although the response has not as yet been rapid, the Dunedin RSA executive feels sure that the quota for the appeal in the city will be met by the end of the month..
