WOMEN WRITERS
Awards v In Poetry Contest PA INVERCARGILL, Oct. 6. The Donovan Cup, which is awarded annually by the New Zealand Women Writers and Artists’ Society in its poetry contest, has been won this year by Miss Nancy Bruce (Wanganui), for her poem “ Kinship.” Announcing the awards today, the judge, Mr A. R. Dunlop (Invercargill), said that of the 20-odd entries the first five contained some remarkably fine work. He awarded second and third place to Mrs D. Le Roi (Christchurch), for “Spring Fog” and “Grass.” Two poems highly commended were Moon Memories,” by Mrs G. Hawkens (Tauranga), and “Lideen” by Mrs L. Mantell (Petone).
A five-year contract was signed on August 28 by the United Automobile Workers (CIO) and the Packard Motor ~omyany similar in its provisions to ‘he 'JAw General Motors agreement eoentlv The contract calls for annual met«».«■■*. -a cost-of-living wage provision, and pensions of dollars a month, including social Security.
