SHEDDING THE VEIL
Moslem Women In Yugoslavia BELGRADE. Yugoslavia’s 750.000 Moslem women are shedding their age-old veils in growing numbers under the impetus of a trade union campaign backed by Moslem officialdom, according to press reports here. At one Moslem meeting at Doboj, in Bosnia, many women discarded their veils publicly with open consent from several men, it was reported. At another meeting at Beshlagic, also in Bosnia, a Moslem woman, Resmija Mehmedajia. told 250 Moslem women: “I am taking down this monster once and for all. I have been wearing it for more than 25 years. I could not see properly with my eyes and this kept me in darkness and in ignorance, and I call upon you from this place to remove your veils as soon as possible, so that you can take an equal part in life with the menfolk and build up a better future." Moslem women’s veils in Yugoslavia, unlike those worn in the Middle East, are completely black and cover the whole of the face; and eyes. Yugoslav trade unions opened a campaign for the total abolition of the veil last July. It was backed by the head of the Moslem community here, Hadji Ibrahim.—-Reuter.
