CATLINS DISTRICT ROADS
Sir,—From the phraseology of L. P.’S letter, it is apparent that he likes Communistic catch-cries. Why does he get stampeded by criticism? Honest criticism is always valuable, and I feel sure that “ Torist ” is honest and truthful, and Is doing the district a real service. If L. P. or any councillor would give the ratepayers on these neglected backblock roads a valid reason for their neglect we might get somewhere. The M.P.’s mentioned by “ Timber ” do battle for new roads, as that is in their province, no matter what Government is in power, but once the roads are formed and metalled the county takes over, and it is its bounden duty to keep them up to a standard of safety to meet modem requirements. Mr Goosman, I believe, did say he was going to use some of the Highways Fund on the “ secondary roads," so “ Timber ” would be doing a service if he could convince the Minister of the needs of the fourth grade roads he talk* about. It would be appreciated by those “ hardy souls ” who live on them, just as they also appreciate his references to the beauty spots and sport to be found in the district. —I am. etc., Ratepayer.
