RECORDS BROKEN
Wanganui Cyclist’s Attempt Succeeds
AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 28. The 23-year-old Wanganui amateur cyclist, Dudley Mitchell, in his second attempt within a month, has broken both the professional and amateur road cycling records for the Auckland to Wellington ride. Leaving Auckland at noon on Wednesday, Mitchell arrived surprisingly fresh at the Wellington Post Office 30 hours 20 minutes later, after covering approximately 465 miles at an average speed of just over 15 miles an hour. The previous amateur record was 35 hours 11 minutes set by O. Barnard, of Dunedin. The professional record was 31 hours 58 minutes. In his first attempt a few weeks ago, Mitchell met bad weather, and was compelled to retire after covering about half of the journey. For his second effort the weather was vastly better. A big crowd gave the cyclist a rousing reception when he pulled in at the Wellington Post Office at 6.20 p.m., and congratulations were extended by officials of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association.
