FIRST APPEALS

Issue Of Wholesale Licence PA WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. The Licensing Control Commission, in Wellington on Wednesday, October 4, will hear the first appeals against the decision of a licensing committee on the grant of a wholesale licence. These appeals are regarded as test cases. • They relate to a wholesale licence authorised by the commission to be issued at Te Aroha. The commission itself does not grant an application for a licence as that is a matter for a licensing committee after it has been given the commission’s authority to receive and consider applications. The Piako Licensing Committee received applications for a Te Aroha wholesale licence, and four of the unsuccessful applicants have lodged appeals. The commission’s hearing of these appeals will be in the nature of a preliminary hearing to test jurisdiction and hear argument on the interpretation to be placed on the licensing legislation as affecting appeals.
