OTAGO HAS THIRD WIN

Women’s Indoor Basketball Tournament CANTERBURY SURPRISES Special to tye Dally Times CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 19. The defeat of last year’s champion team, Palmerston North, by Canterbury in the New Zealand Women’s Indoor Basketball Tournament this evening was the highlight of the day’s play. Otago continued to play well for its third successive win by beating Hutt Valley in a hard game in the morning and Wairarapa by a substantial margin In the afternoon. Even Game In the game against Hutt Valley, both teams were evenly matched, and there was little difference throughout. Otago managed to maintain a slight advantage, and at half time had a lead of six points with the score at 16—10. The Otago captain, Yvette Williams, played a sound game and scored four well-earned goals. M. Anglem was always reliable on defence and foiled many pressing attacks by the Hutt Valley forwards. The final score was 20—17. Oonvincing Win Otago was far too strong for Wairarapa and won by the convincing score of 30—15. The game was a little scrappy In the first half, but after the Otago forwards, led by M. Anglem, carried out a persistent attack on file Wairarapa goal, the game speeded up considerably, and a bright display was given by the Otago team, which combined well in the later stages. Yvette Williams played another sound captain’s game, her agile and long reaches causing amazement. Much interest Is centred in the game between Southland and Otago tomorrow. Southland has been beaten in both its games, but has shown a marked improvement on last season’s form.
