COAL FOR GAS
Refusal To Work Ships PA AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. The Auckland waterside workers today refused applications for labour to discharge gas coal from the Kaitanagta and the Omana. The port was again completely idle and only carriers’ trucks remained to give some air of business to the quiet wharves. Steady inroads are being made in the clearance of cargoes from the sheds.
For the third morning in succession, the Auckland unionists will meet at 9 o’clock tomorrow to receive instructions from the national executive in Wellington. With the arrival tonight from Vancouver of the liner Aorangi. bringing 1400 tons of Auckland cargo, nearly 40,000 tons are awaiting discharge from shipping. The Aorangi’s shipment is stowed above goods for Sydney and if she is not worked here before her departure on Thursday, this cargo will require double handling in Australia. Thirteen overseas and 12 inter-colonial and large coastal ships of an aggregate tonnage of more than 142,000 gross will be in port tomorrow.
