JAMELL IMPRESSES
Faites Vos Jenx Shows Speed TWO-YEAR-OLDS IN ACTION By Springfield A solid six furlongs by Faites vos Jeux on the course proper and a good five on the sand by Jamell were features of the semi-final trials for the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Conditions were ideal at Wingatui yesterday morning, and the course proper, with the trestles about 50 feet out, was used for most of the gallops. Faites vos Jeux had too much speed for Social News and Welcome Guest over six furlongs. He was about five lengths clear into the straight, and maintained that advantage over Social News to the post, with Welcome Guest beaten oft. He took lmin 17 4-ssec for the full distance, the opening three in 37 l-ssec, and the final four in 53 l-ssec. Faites vos Jeux has not been long In work and, as he generally races best, when fresh, he is not without prospects in the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday. Man o’ Kent and Gay Fenian were together at the end of a similar task on the sand in lmin 18sec. They took 37 l-ssec for their opening three and 53sec for the last half. Man o’ Kent is a useful novice, and he may soon graduate to open hack company. Gal Fenian went well considering the small amount of fast work he has had. Way Home was shading Master Galloway and George Haig at the end of six furlongs in lmin 21 2-ssec. They, could have improved considerably after taking 39 3-ssec for the opening three and 55 for the last half. All three are' novice gallopers Royal Simper was going better than Kinloch Bridge at the end of six furlongs in lmin 23sec, the last half in 56 3-ssec. Cricket Field went over a similar distance on his own on the sand in lmin 23 2-ssec. He was under a good hold all the way, taking 42 l-ssec for the opening three and 54 2-ssec for the last half. Cherry Prinfie Hard Held All Hurry was in front of Cherry Prince, who was travelling well within himself, at the end of six in lmin 24 l-ssec. They took 41sec for the first three and 56 4-ssec for the last half. Jamell provided the main interest over five furlongs when he recorded lmin 3sec on the sand. He took 24 2-ssec for the opening two furlongs. He was loafing at the post and could have Improved considerably. Our Girl was not hurried to record lmin 7 4-ssec for her five furlongs. She took 26 2-ssec for the first two furlongs and 54 l-ssec for the last half. Roving Robin, with more than 10.0 on his back, recorded lmin 8 4-ssec for his five furlongs, and he was travelling easily at the post after taking 55 l-ssec for the last half. St. Bruno was going easily alongside Fine Art at the end of five furlongs in lmin 9 l-ssec, the opening furlong in 13 3-ssec. St. Bruno has seldom looked better, and he should give a good account in whichever race is chosen for him on Saturday at Wingatui. St. Columba was going better than Belgravia at the end of an easy seven furlongs in lmin 35 2-ssec. They took 51 3-ssec for the first half and 56 l-ssec for the, last half. St. Columba will -be hard to beat if raced over a bit of ground on Saturday. Asaf Jah, Detract and Avonhead were on terms at the end of a similar task in lmin 36sec, the opening four in 54 1- and the last four in 55 2-ssec. The novice galloper Chatswin returned the best half-mile of the morning, 52 3-ssec, the opening furlong in 13sec. Duvaals and Winning Gem were running on at the end of Half a mile in 53 2- the opening furlong in 12 2-ssec. Both should give a good account of themselves on Saturday. Three-furlong Tasks
Concealment, who looks an improved horse, was let off with a quiet three furlongs in 43sec. He was followed by Command and Harvard, who returned 40 3-ssec. Harvard is an attractive mover.
Passing Parade and Glengaro were together at the end of three in 43 2-ssec Both horses were running on. A number of two-year-olds with engagements in the McLean' Stakes were given short sprints. Eight youngsters were sent away from the barrier at the mile post, and they were eased up approaching the half-mile peg. At that stage Deploy, a full brother to last year’s McLean Stakes winner, Delayed, was shading a Balloch— Listen In filly with Master Key third and Dusty Miller fourth. * They took 37 4-ssec for the last three furlongs. Deploy is a likely sort, and the Balloch filly has plenty of ability. Brilliant Light (Royal Chief—Aurora Australis) and Royal Light (Royal Chief— Soft Light) were together at the end of three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Royal Light was going the better of the pair. Silence was going better than Kind Wish at the end of a similar task in 39 4-ssec. Silence is one of the early favourites for the McLean Stakes.
Denza impressed by the manner in which he ran over two furlongs in 24 2-ssec. The Sir Galloway gelding is an attractive mover.
Slick jumped safely over four flights of the schooling hurdles. He may race at Geraldine if a suitable rider can be found for him.
Relampago was sent over four flights, but he did not jump well. He got in a bit close at the last fence.
Fille d’Honneur may start at Geraldine on Saturday in preference to Wingatui, when she will run out her hack nominations. Nothing is definite, and she will be accepted for at both meetings. Mr D. J. McDonald’s two-year-old colt by Royal Chief from Silver Lily has met with an accident, and he has been turned out.
Mr Speaker, who recently joined A. E. Didham's team, has been put aside in the meantime. He was a disappointment in his races, although he showed speed in his track gallops.
