PICKING DOUBLES

Timaru Man “ Works On A System ” " I work on a system.” was how a Timaru racegoer described his fortune in having a ticket on the Open Sky-Ryeland combination, which returned £llO9 6s tor £1 on the totalisator double at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. This man—he did not want his name published—spent £3O covering the first leg of the double, the Claremont Handicap, which the little-fancied Open Sky won decisively. He held enough tickets on Open Sky to cover six of the nine runners in the Levels Hack Handicap, which was won narrowly by Ryeland, another lightly-supported runner. His return for 10s was £554 13s. Discussing his good fortune, he said that he had " struck ” doubles at Dunedin, Oamaru, and Geraldine meetings. In some cases his outlay had been so heavy that even when he picked the winning combination he was a loser. However, a big return, such as he received on Saturday, put him well on the credit side in his doubles betting. Four tickets held on Open Sky in the first leg were redeemed on Ryeland. The holders of two tickets were ' paid by cheque soon after the race.
