RUSA BUBBLE BURSTS

Half-Brother To Soneri Before the Trentham winter meeting, the Tiderace colt Rusa was being freely discussed as a Winter Cup proposition as a result of his easy wins at Foxton and Wanganui. His admirers were no doubt mindful of the deeds of his half-sister, Soneri, who scored her first win in the Winter Cup soon after qualifying from hack company. It is most Improbable that Rusa will start in the big Riccarton mile after his disappointing displays at Trentham. In both starts he was made a warm favourite, but he was well back at the finish of his races. It is likely that the heavy going was the cause of his poor form ( but most of the Tiderace breed are at home in adverse conditions It was stated earlier that he may be treated to a short spell, but he has been handicapped for the Camla Hack Handicap at Riccarton this week. Rusa is a rather leggy colt at present, but if given a chance now he should develop into a grand type next season. If he does not make good, the opinions of a number of good judges will be rather badly shaken. JOTTINGS In "his present form, Wee Mac may pick up a race within the next week or two. Acceptances for the Christchurch Hunl Club’s meeting are due today. The annual meeting of* members of the Dunedin Jockey Club will be held tomorrow night. Nightly Gelding Ryeland, winner of the second leg at Washdyke on Saturday, is a three-year-old gelding by Nightly from Miss Myra, a Man’s Pal mare from Clorane, by Rosewing from Belclaire, by Treclare. Felous Sold ' The Solarlo stallion Felous, who had limited opportunities at the stud in New Zealand, has been shipped to Sydney with the brood mares Bayadeer (the dam of Bay Fort) and Gallina. They have been purchased by Mr P. McCullough. , Improved Showing The Salmagundi mare Weldrest gave an improved showing to finish third to Chasemint and Hobgoblin in the Pentlow Hack Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. Although she was well beaten, she should soon make amends, and a return to the winning list cannot be far off. Impressive Debut « The three-year-old English-bred colt King’s Command created a good impression by the easy manner in which he accounted for the field in. the Gleniti Stakes at Washdyke on Saturday. It was his first appearance in a race and he should go on to the best company next term. Foaled in May, 1947, he Is by Big Game from Rusk, by Manna from Baby Polly, by Spearmint (a son of Carbine) from that famous mare Pretty Polly. Mr A. Grant, of Fairlie, secured the colt privately after he had been passed in at the Trentham autumn sales last year. He is trained at Oamaru by J C. McKerrow. Young -John Injured Young John broke a rib, also a blood vessel, when he came down over a fallen horse in the hurdle race at Washdyke on Saturday. The steeplechaser Sea Dog injured a leg when he fell In the Hunt Cup. Irish Note Retired Irish Note was lame after his race in the Pareora Steeplechase at Washdyke, and as a result it has been decided that he .will not race again. He will be sent to Glenmark, Mr D. W. J. Gould’s property in North Canterbury, where he will end his days in a quiet life. Irish Note, a nine-year-old by Irish Lancer from Half Note, was bred in Otago by D. J. McDonald, from whom the Riccarton trainer, F. Roberts, bought him. He later passed the gelding on to Mr D. W. J. Gould, for whom he won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. Later in the same season he won a mile and a-half handicap at Trentham, followed by the Trentham Stakes, a weight-for-age race, of a mile and three furlongs. After a spell he was hunted and Saturday's race at Washdyke was his first since he resumed work. He jumped well and it looked as if he only needed to remain sound to win races over country.
