OFFER TO COUNCIL

Land Opposite Orana Park

Offers to sell land opposite Orana Park, fronting Thames, Orwell and Weaver streets, were received by the Oamaru Borough Council at .its monthly meeting last night from the' owner, Miss E. A. Pugh. One area, that fronting Thames and Weaver streets, contains 3 roods 27.47 poles, and the other, facing Orwell street, contains 3 roods 24.97 poles. A motion by Cr Stubbs that the borough valuer be asked to value the property and the whole matter be referred to the Finance Committee was carried. The Mayor expressed the view that the property was undesirable and would become a burden on the ratepayers. Cr Stubbs said that children between the ages of 8 and 14 years were not catered for in Oamaru and the property under discussion would fill this requirement. The Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, was in the chair, and there were also present —Crs W. R. Laney. A. Wilson, A. E. Hodge, A. Hamilton, J. I. McEwan, H. R. Wise. E. S. Stubbs, T. R. Beatty and B. Steven. A deputation from persons grazing stock on reserves E and F waited on the council. In a letter asking that the deputation be received, it was stated that if the reasons for banning horses and cows were pecuniary, the deputation would be pleased to discuss the question of raising the grazing fees. Mr Meehan, leader of the deputation, said that between 18 and 20 cows were grazed on the reserve, and the number of people affected would be in the vicinity of about 80. The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee.

The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Ernest Andrews, wrote expressing thanks to the citizens of Oamaru for their message of congratulation on the occasion of the honour of knighthood being conferred upon him. The council dealt with a recommendation of the Works Committee that it consider the offer received from the Amenities Advertising Company to provide and install rubbish cabinets within the borough. It was agreed to accept the offer. Cr Hodge opposed the motion on the grounds that the. containers were not required. Cr Stubbs’s amendment that the company be requested to supply two cabinets on trial for six months was lost. Cr Hamilton suggested that consideration be given to the construction of a fountain in Thames street. The council, he said, had received legacies for specific purposes. It was pointed out that all moneys bequeathed to, the council had already been ear-marked for special purposes. £SOO having been allocated to improved lighting in the Gardens and £7OO for the installation of a heating system in the glasshouse and propagating houses. Cr Beatty made a suggestion that consideration be given to the installation of an adequate heating system in the Opera House. The Town Hall Committee was asked to give consideration to the proposal prior to next year’s estimates.
