RANFURLY SHIELD
Northland’s Challenge
Confirmed PA WHANGAREI, July 20. Northland’s challenge for the Ranfurly Shield will be gone on with, said the chairman of the Management Committee of the Northland Rugby Union, Mr D. K. Ross, at a social to the British Isles team after yesterday’s match, in which Northland was narrowly beaten. “From now on I am interested only ■in playing for Northland. As far as bigger football is concerned, I would be just as happy to turn it in. If I am fit, I shall play for the Maori side against the British team, but I do not intend to put myself out for anybody but Northland. This season my chief interest is the Ranfurly Shield challenge and the matches against Auckland.” These comments were made by the Northland captain, J. B. Smith, this morning. Smith said his shoulder, which he dislocated yesterday, was sore and stiff. “If I had been chosen for the fourth test, I would have made every effort to get right," he said, “but I will just let the shoulder mend itself. If I am all right I shall play for the Maoris.”
