THE GROUP
Experimental Painters
EXHIBITION OPENED
“All people who experiment should be encouraged, especially in a society where conformity is more popular than experiment,” said Mr P. A. Smithells, director of the Otago University School of Physical Education, when opening an exhibition of paintings by The Group in the Public Library lecture hall. It was interesting to see how the painters had influenced each other's styles, to their own mutual benefit. The home of The Group is in Christchurch, but its members are drawn from all parts of New Zealand. Originally, The Group was made up of experimental painters who broke away from the traditional styles of the art. Such works as characterise The Group’s activities are not usually exhibited in Art Society exhibitions. There is only room in the lecture hall for 40 paintings to be hung, from a total of 140, but much interest should be aroused during the week in which the public will have an opportunity to view The Group’s paintings. It is hoped to hold similar exhibitions each year.
