IMPORTING OF TEA

Private Firms To Take Over

PA DANNEVIRKE, July 15. The Minister of Marketing, Mr Holyoake, in a statement today, said the importation and distribution of tea is to revert to private enterprise. On the removal of the subsidy, the Government entered into discussions with the New Zealand Tea Packers' Federation for the Marketing Department to cease buying tea as soon as possible, and for imports to be made through private traders. An agreement to this effect had been reached, said Mr Holyoake, but would take some months to come into operation, as the department had already made tea purchases which would meet the demand for some months yet. When stocks drop to a suitable level, importers will be advised to apply for licences through the usual channels.
