SLOT TELEPHONE CHARGES

Sir, —Is it really necessary or desirabla to raise the charge for slot telephones to twopence? Everyone, at some time, finds it necessary to use these phones, and they should be regarded as a public amenity and not as a source of profit or even have to be self-supporting. Considerable expense must be entailed In making the necessary alteration,- and also it means finding two pennies instead of one for, possibly, an urgent call. Would it not be much better to leave the phones as they are and make up any deficiency from some public account?—4 am, etc., E. FoweU.
