Holiday Accidents In United States Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, May 31. The toll of accidental deaths in the United States over the fourday Memorial Day holiday rose to a record figure of 547 early today as the return of holidaymakers neared an end. The total included a record-breaking death roll on highways which took 330 lives. Drownings accounted for 92 lives, and miscellaneous mishaps killed 125. The president of the National Safety Council, Mr Ned Dearborn, said that careless driving and mass indifference had turned the holiday into a massacre.
