PETROL TAX

Votes To Highways Board, MEMBER EXPLAINS POSITION PA WHANGAREI, May 31. Practically the whole of the petrol tax was being returned to the Main Highways Hoard for use in constructing and maintaining roads and bridges, said Mr J. Wynyard, the motorists’ representative on the board, at a meeting of the Northland Highways Council. “About three years ago it was decided that the board would not receive petrol vehicle licence and tyre taxes directly, but by way of a vote from the Consolidated Fund for maintenance and reconstruction, and a vote from the public works for new construction,” Mr Wynyard said. “The board made it a condition that the amount received should never be less than what would have been received if the taxes were given directly to the board. “Last year the board received a little more than Is a gallon for both maintenance and, construction work,” Mr Wynyard coritinued. “ I am not quite sure but that the whole Is 2.7 d tax was not returned to us. Anyway, it may be said that just about the whole of the petrol tax is spent oh roads, so we are probably better off than we were under the old system.”
