FIELD SELECTED
Trials Run For Sapling Stakes
The Ashburton Trotting Club reduced the field for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, which .will be run next Monday, after three qualifying races had been run on Tuesday. The field is now;—Pyrites, Safeguard. First Victory, Highland Light, Dealer’s Choice, Adorian, Flagship, Taradale, Esquire, Radiant Night, Kapeen, Wyvern, Moreto* and Prince Charming. Winners in Johnny Globe and Vivanfl, who did not have to start in the trials, are also in the field.
First Victory, winner of the first heat, is a classy-looking colt by Light Brigade from Erehom and he is expected to make a bold showing on Monday. He is owned by Mr R. H. Kennedy, who bought him from his trainer, M. Holmes, when he was still a foal. Adorian was half a length behind First Victory and then came Highland Light. Pyrites, Safeguard and Dealer’s Choice together. The winner’s time for the mile and a-half was 3min 28 2-ssec, the last half in lmin 3 3-ssec.
The second heat was won in convincing style by the Josedale Dictator gelding, Esquire, who recorded 3min 24sec, .the last half-mile vn lmin 4 l-ssec. He was two lengths clear of Radiant Night with half a length to Taradale. They were followed by Kapeen and F)agship, who broke at the start.
Prince Charming led all the way in the third division and he was travelling well within himself at the post ahead of Wyvern and Moreto. Prince Charming’s time was 3min 29sec, his last half-mile requiring lmin 3 4-ssec. A colt, Prince Charming is owned by Mr E. D. Johnston, for whom he is trained by C. R. Berkett at Templeton. He is by Springfield Globe from Grace McElwyn and he ranks as a full-brother to the brilliant f Gay Knight, and a half-brother to Terry O'Shea and Troubadour, Wyvern is a filly by Dillon Hall from More Expense and she impressed last week when she ran fifth in the Juvenile Handicap at Addington last Saturday. Vivanti, who has won at her last three appearances, is certain to be at cramped odds on Monday and, providing she a good beginning, she should earn the first prize. Most opposition may come from First Victory who looks a highclass youngster, and Esquire. Johnny Globe’s prospects are also being discussed, but he has not given the impression in his races that he would run out a mile and a-half.
