SCHOOLING TASKS
Tin Hat And First Out
Impress FAST AND CLEAN JUMPING By Springfield Useful tasks by Tin Hat and his stablemate, First Out, Periwig and Night Fighter, candidates for the steeplechase events at Wingatui on Saturday, were the only serious trials yesterday morning. Trainers had the use of the steeplechase course for the first time and 11 horses were worked over it. First Out (B. J. Langford) led Phantom Night (D. Dawson), Libellula (N. H. Ellis), Kiltie (B. R. Thomson) and Shanks Pony (M. Milne) over the brush at the top of the straight and they were picked up by Knight Crusader (R. P. Langford) and Night Fighter (A. J. Murray) about half a furlong from the sod wall. First Out was shading Phantom Night into the sod wall and the former went on in the lead. Kiltie and Shanks Pony did not jump too well although they got over safely. All seven cleared the post and rails and the sod wall approaching the seven, with First Out drawing away Four horses dropped out here and First Out, Night Fighter and Knight Crusader carried on to the board fence, where the first-named was being pursued by Night Fighter, with Knight Crusader jumping slowly in the rear. Night Fighter was on terms with First Out at the finish of their task and both should race well in the Otago Steeplechase. Knight Crusader will be improved by the gallop. Tin Hat (B. J. Langford) and Periwig (B. R. Thomson) were picked up by Ara Chief (R. G. Hollamby) and Stylus R. P. Langford) after about two furlongs and they completed a circuit of the course in fine style. Tin Hat and Periwig were together throughout and there was plenty of pace on. Ara Chief trailed the pair all the way and created a good impression as he has not had much experience. Stylus jumped safely all the way behind the others and he was running on well at the finish. On her own Eve Acre (R. P. Langford) gave a 'mediocre display. She scrambled over the sod wall and baulked at the post and rails. She cleared it at her second attempt and needed two attempts to clear the sod wall going into the back. She cleared the remaining three fences safely. She would have been better with a companion. A large number of visiting horses were on the tracks, most of them being restricted to strong pace work. Foxchase is back with A. E. Didham and he worked keenly over a round at half pace. There was some light rain in Dunedin on Tuesday night, but the fall at Wingatui was negligible. The tracks are in great order and the weather seems more settled. Additional riding engagements are:— A. N. Didham, Roving Robin; B. J. Langford—Faites vos Jeux, Loch Lennox, Rhine Lord; W. F. Ellis, Concealment, Slick; A. E. Didham, Teal, Sylvan; J. W. Dooley—.Navourneen, Philip Laing, Great Victory; A. J. McDonald, Grand Pal; K. J. Hollamby—Kukuiti, Tamerlane, Vain Lad; B. J.
