RETURN TO REALITY
Need For Tolerance ADDRESS BY MR HAYMAN Tolerance and co-operation in their association with others, and a need for all sections of the community to carry their fair share of work and responsibility in maintaining the prosperity of the Dominion were the main points of an address by Mr T. L. Hayman, member of Parliament for Oamaru, at the fifth annual conference of Federated Farmers of Otago yesterday. Mr Hayman brought a message of goodwill from the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Holyoake. “New Zealand’s future is in the hands of farmers’ organisations to a degree surpassing that of any other section,” Mr Hayman said. Farmers should set an example. They were the biggest industry in the country, and the world was short of food. “ Let us stop groaning and get down to business,” Mr Hayman added. “In New Zealand we have an example of one of the biggest welfare States, but we have to consider how we are going to pay for it. If the present regime fails, what is the alternative? Make the best of your industry and cooperate with all. Unless we do this, there is no hope for New Zealand.” Mr Hayman said that the mistake of the previous Government was that it did not worry about the vote of the farmer. “You will have to accept your share of responsibility, and when anything hurts, don’t groan; grin and bear it,” he said. “We will have to produce the goods, but we will have more to share. That is the road we must follow.” Every man would be entitled to a fair share for his work. Farmers and manufacturers were doing their part. It was up to all sections to do the same. The removal of subsidies was not a calamity. It was a return to reality. Appealing for a greater production of wheat. Mr Hayman said that the Government was to pay a higher price, so that more wheat might be grown. It would be disastrous if the increase meant only a greater return for those already growing it.
