WAITAKI BRIDGE

Motor Union’s Interest

" The executive is gratified with the progress made, and agrees with the Minister's proposals for the construction of a nesv highway bridge in the future, and as a provisional improvement the construction of passing places over the bridge." This statement was contained in a letter received at Monday night's meeting of the North Otago Automobile Association from the South Isftmd Motor Union with reference to the progress being made with the Waitaki bridge project. Mr W. M. Richardson said it was pleasing to see that interest was being taken in a work the necessity for which had been first raised by the North Otago Association. Mr Richardson, who was in the chair, referring to the new camp building, said that once again the question should be deferred because of the small attendance of members. He made an appeal for a full attendance of members at the next meeting-. Mr A. C. Taylor moved that the question be left over till next month, and this was carried. Advice was received that Pukeuri residents were making application to have a 30-mile speed limit imposed through that township. Members expressed the view that the appeal was worthy of support, and several added that, with the forking of the main road at that point, it was fortunate that no major road accidents had occurred previously. A speed limit at this point would be a further safety measure.

Mr Taylor said that the existing signs at the Island Stream bridge were, in his opinion, still insufficient. Several reflectors had been inserted in the posts at the bridge, but he was of the opinion that a white line in the centre of the road would be of assistance to drivers at night. Members agreed with Mr Taylor, and it was decided to ask the Main Highways Board to undertake the painting of the road.
