FIRM AUCTION

Christchurch Wool Sale

RISE ON MARCH RATES PA CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. The fourth and final Christchurch wool sale of the 1949-50 season was held today before a large bench of buyers. The offering totalled approximately 14,300 bales. The fleece portion of the offering comprised wools from the Chatham Islands and the West Coast, together with back country halfbred and merino clips and later shorn down country wools. There was a large offering of lambs' wool, probably the largest which has ever been submitted in Christchurch. There was also a small showing of second shear wools in style. The catalogues comprised wools typical of the last Christchurch sale of the season, halfbreds and merinos being heavy in condition and sometimes sandy, and crossbreds being discoloured and partly cotted. Competition was keen, but was by no means general, being confined mostly to two or three Continental buyers with Bradford interests operating only or selected lots. Local mills bought a proportion of the catalogue, but not a very large one, as wools to their standard were not on offer. As compared with the last Christchurch sale held on March 31 merinos were 3d to 4d a lb dearer, fine halfbreds and halfbreds from 3d to 4d a lb dearer, fine crossbreds from 5d to 8d dearer. These latter wools fully reflected the price increase that has taken place at recent North Island sales and. if anything, were a fraction firmer. Lambs’ wool met very keen competition and prices here increased on the March Christchurch rates from 10d to 12d. Halfbred pieces sold very well and were 4d lb dearer. There was only a small offering of hogget wools and these did not participate to the same extent in the general price rise. Following is the official range of prices:— d. d.
