THANKSGIVING SOCIAL
The diamond jubilee thanksgiving social of the Methodist Central Mission was held in the Concert Chamber after - the open-air service on Saturday night. 'The Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, on ' behalf of the city, congratulated the .“mission on its diamond jubilee, and a debt of gratitude to the influence the mission had had on him : during the formative years of his life. 'He was proud to be a member of the , mission, he said. The mission was congratulated by Sister Marie, who was deaconness at the mission 40 years ago, Major Goffin, of the Salvation Army, who repre- . sented the National Council of Churches, and the Rev. D. J. D. Hickman, chairman of the Otago-Southland Methodist district, on behalf of the sister Methodist churches. Songs were presented by Miss Noni ■ Masters’s singing group, instrumental items were given by the Napier trio and songs were presented by Mr N. Tasker. The accompanist was Miss Ruby White. YESTERDAY’S SERVICES The Rev. R. F. Clement, of Lower Hutt, an ex-member of the mission, was the guest preacher at the morning and evening services held yesterday In the afternoon a youth department jubilee and Mother’s Day service was also held. Mrs Menzies, wife of the Rev. Dr Menzies, who is supplying at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, gave the address. A baptismal service was conducted by Mr Neale. The Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, city councillors, councillors from neighbouring boroughs, and local members of Parliament attended the evening service. Sir Donald read the lesson, special jubilee music was sung by the choir, and Mrs Noni Masters gave a solo.
