NOTES ON THE RUNNING

Favourite Disappoints 1 * Clifton Star was the only defection from the carded field for the Plunket Stakes. Attachment was left, and Morano hobbled slightly. Tiberius led past the stands from Imperial Lord, Yankiwi, Van Dieman, who began brilliantly, Lisnaskea, Preston and Te Maru together. Petro Star, Morano, Sydney Victor and Monty Jason. Sydney Victor pulled out a fine burst of speed at the end of six furlongs, and at the far turn Tiberius was swinging along in front of Te Maru and Sydney Victor, with Imperial Lord, Preston, Van Dieman, Lisnaskea and Morano following. Tiberius was still the spearhead into the last round, and he was being trailed by Imperial Lord, who had Sydney Victor on the outside, Lisnaskea, Te Maru, Morano and Van Dieman. The last-named swept round the field to be second to Tiberius at the three-furlong post, and, continuing his run, he was well clear .rinto the straight. A furlong from home he looked all over a winner, but Preston and Te Maru were coming fast, and when he collapsed Te Maru drew clear to beat Preston, who just held Morano out of second place. 1 Tiberius hung on for fourth, and then came Yankiwi and Petro Star. OUTSIDERS PLACED As a result of his decisive win on the first day of the meeting, Hemisphere was made a warm favourite for the Captain Sandy Handicap, but he never looked like reaching a place. Heavy drizzle was falling at the time, and visibility was poor. Daisy Bar broke at the start, and the early leaders were Antrim Hall, Kopara Lass, Aerogard, Peter’s Pal, Trouville and , Brydone Hall. With five furlongs to run, the stable-mates, Aerogard and Trouville, were shading Antrim Hall, with Curiosity moving up to fourth ahead of Brydone Hall and Peter’s Pal. Peggydale, Direct Power and Desert Flight put in runs on the bottom bend, and Brydone Hall made a short-lived attempt to reach the front turning for home. Curiosity and Trouville were first into the straight, but Peggydale came through and hit the front inside the last furlong to win decisively from Direct Power, who finished strongly. Peter’s Pal was third and Aerogard fourth. The next to finish were Trouville and Desert Flight. CONFIDENTLY DRIVEN Tactician won the Bruce Memorial Handicap in a manner that suggested a brisht future for him. He was'very confidently driven over the concluding stages. Lochinvar appeared to have every chance, but did not finish on. Trixie Milne, Tekau, Lochinvar, Mountain Tarn and Maori Queen began well, and with six furlongs covered Maori Queen was showing the way to Tekau, Lochinvar, Trixie Milne, Joan McKinney and Mountain Tarn. Coming through the straight the second time there was practically no alteration in the order, with Tactician in ninth position and giving the leaders about eight lengths. Lochinvar took up the running five furlongs from home, with Maori Queen next, ahead of Tekau, Trixie Milne and Joan McKinney. Tactician put in a run halfway through the back, and positions changed rapidly at the far turn, where Joan McKinney was leading from Tactician, Mountain Tarn and Piccolo. Joan McKinney was well clear into the straight, but she had no chance with Tactician in the run home. Piccolo finished third and Final Return fourth. Mountain Tarn, Maori Queen and Trixie Milne were next. CONSISTENCY REWARDED Terrace Lass capped a number of placed performances by winning the Welcome Handicap No 1, but she had to be driven right out to hold Colinova off by. the narrowest of margins. Filament, Assist, Grattan Chief and Keretaki lost ground at the start and the first to show out were Dillon View, Validity, Sun Lane, and Isa Lei. Into the back it was Dillon View from Validity Sun Lane, Main Force, Terrace Lass, Swithindale, Colinova, Safeguard, and Scotty’s Double. Swithindale moved up at the half and at the far turn was third to Terrace Lass and Validity, with Colinova coming through. Terrace Lass drew clear on the home turn and was first into the straight from Validity, with Colinova and Swithindale next. Validity did not run on and Terrace Lass hung on to beat Colinova, with Swithindale three lengths away. Safeguard, a particularly promising two-year-old by Springfield Globe, came home well for fourth ahead of Validity and Isa Lei. EASY FOR REAR LIGHT Rear Light was backed down to short prices for the Introductory Handicap and he was moving like a winner a long way from home. Combateer was first to show out from Predicament, Windydale, Ingenuity, Harvard, Rear Light, and Sylvette. Predicament headed Combateer in the back stretch and with six furlongs to run these two were followed by Windydale, Sylvette, Rear Light, Harvard, Mountain Range, who was inclined to bobble, Efficient, Stray Shot, and Bishop's Cleeve. Rear Light had not yet been asked for an effort and was being confidently driven. At the far turn, however, he was taken up to be handy to the leaders, and into the straight it was Combateer and Sylvette, with Rear Light coming on the outer and Mountain Range also putting in a claim. The last-named broke and Rear Light went on for an easy win from Sylvette. Mountain Range, who made a good recovery, was third and Combateer fourth. Efficient and Ingenuity were next. * PROMINENT THROUGHOUT The bracket of Diligent and Penno’s Pride was solidly backed for the Welcome Handicap No. 2, and Diligent was prominent throughout to win from Gallant Satin and Imperial Lord, who were always near the leaders. Scott Junior broke badly at the start and Essendon and Maid Myra also failed to strike their gaits. At the end of half a mile Diligent and Trueleen were showing the wav to Imperial Lord. Gallant Satin, and Attraction. Trueleen lost her place in the run down the back and at the far turn Attraction ran up to Diligent and thev were followed by Imperial Lord, Gallant Satin. Doris Potts, Penno’s Pride, and Jingle’s Pride. Attraction dropped out in the straight and Diligent held oil Gallant Satin’s challenge. Imperial Lord was third, ahead of Penno’s Pride and Attraction REAR LIGHT’S THIRD WIN Penalised 36 va’rds, Rear Light had his third win at the meeting in the Ascot Vale Handicap from Globe Son and Bashaw, who put up good performances from the back marks. Kerry Girl went out fast and when the field settled down in Indian file she was clear of Sure Peg, Dalcassian. Jennv Dillon, Globe * Son, Rear Light and Super Sarin. Daredevil had broken up badly and Efficient and Canny Scott also lost their chances. With a round to go Kerry Girl was still trotting solidly out in -front from Sure Peg, Globe Sun, Rear Light, Alandale, Super Sarin and Dalcassian. Bashaw was still well back but three furlongs from home he was bridging tne gap that Kerry Girl, Globe Son, Rear Light and Sure Peg had ooened up on the remainder of the field. Kerry Girl weakened and Rear Light easily gathered Globe Son in for his third win.’ Bashaw, who skipced slightly, got up for third ahead of Sure Peg. Mack Sure, Alandale and Super Sarin were next. LED ALL THE WAY Scottish Nurse led all the way to win the Enfield Handicap, her second success at the meeting. Ascot again refused to settle down and Trusty Dale also lost his chance. At the end of two furlongs Scottish Nurse was followed by Clifton Star, Queen of Scots, Banquet. Hall, Ebony Hall, Young Atlas, Centenary Boy and Son's Gift Young Atlas, Centenary Boy and Son’s
