TE MARU BRILLIANT

SPORTING

Decisive Success In Plunket Slakes At Oamaru SURPRISE FROM PEGGYDALE By the Sporting Editor Although form worked out well in most of the races on the second day of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, there was an upset in the Captain Sandy Handicap, the second leg of the double, in which three outsiders filled the places. Peggydale, the winner, struck top gear more quickly than she usually does and she was going away from the field at the finish. By winning she made the double with Te Maru worth £2027 17s, a record since doubles were reintroduced. Te Maru .won the first leg brilliantly. The Sandydale colt was always one of the leaders and when asked for his final run responded gamely and had a decisive margin at the post. No excuses could be made for the others and the disappointment of the race was Van Dieman, who stopped badly in the straight when he had a substantial lead. The southern three-year-old Sydney Victor was well placed with a round to go but he drifted right out of it. Rear Light won three faces at the meeting, and Scottish Nurse and Te Maru each won a double. The meeting was opened in overcast weather, with occasional light mist which developed into heavy drizzle for the last two races. The going was in good order at the outset but slightly greasy towards the finish.

Gift. There was little change in the order as the field paced into the last round, but Son’s Gift moved up in the back stretch to be third to turn for home to Scottish Nurse and Queen of Scots, with Clifton Star and Young Atlas next. Scottish Nurse never looked like being headed and won well from Cltfton Star and Young Atlas. Queen of Scots was fourth and then came Son’s Gift, Mystery Dillon and Luck Ahead.
