BALLOT DELAYED
Strike Issufr In British Unions NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 7 p.m. LONDON, Apl. 5. The Confederation of Engineering and Shipbuilding Unions, which recently decided to hold a strike ballot of the 1,000,000 members of its 37 constituent unions as a protest against the employers’ rejection of its demand for an all-round wage increase of £1 a week, has decided to delay the distribution of the ballot papers pending further discussions with the employers and the Government. The chief purpose of these talks, to which the employers have agreed “without prejudice,” will be to revise the complicated wage structure of the engineering and shipbuilding industries. Though the task is a formidable one, it is hoped that the talks will induce better feeling between the employers and workers and dissuade the unions from proceeding further with plans for holding the strike ballot. It has been pointed out to the workers’ representatives by the Ministry of Labour that a strike vote would contravene the existing orders governing employment and national arbitration.
